Health care and blood safety advocates urge federal government to revoke license of paid plasma clinic

Ottawa, ON  – Media conference with health and blood safety advocates will take place tomorrow. They will be sharing new information that plasma from paid donors collected by Canadian Plasma Resources will be sold on the international market and it is not being earmarked for Canadian use.

WHAT: Media Conference

WHEN: 10am, Tuesday, April 12th

WHERE: Blue Room, 2nd Floor, 25One Community, 251 Bank Street, Ottawa, ON

WHO: Andrew Cumming, co-infected hemophiliac and tainted blood survivor; Kat Lanteigne, Cofounder of Bloodwatch.org; Adrienne Silnicki, National Coordinator of Canadian Health Coalition; Dr. Michèle Brill-Edwards, Physician

Why: Plasma, a protein in blood, is now being collected from paid donors in Saskatchewan by the for-profit company Canadian Plasma Resources (CPR). CPR and Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott have been claiming that paying donors for their plasma will help create self-sufficiency in Canada. It is now known that CPR will likely have to sell Canadians’ plasma on the international market jeopardizing the ability for Canada to be self-sufficient in plasma.

Additional concerns about the remuneration of plasma donors will be raised.

The Canadian Health Coalition and Bloodwatch.org continue to call on the federal government to revoke the license granted to Canadian Plasma Resources and to fully implement the recommendations of the Krever Inquiry which took place after Canada’s tragic tainted blood scandal.
