Does Pierre Poilievre have a “secret” health care agenda?

Voters will go to the ballot box on Monday without any information about Pierre Poilievre’s plans for Canada’s ailing public health care system.

The Conservatives’ election platform, released today, contains no details on how the would-be Prime Minister would address what three-quarters of Canadians describe as a health care “crisis” (Environics, 2024).

Why is he keeping his health care agenda a secret?

“Why is he keeping his health care agenda a secret?” asked Steven Staples, National Director of Policy and Advocacy for the Canadian Health Coalition. “It’s a complete abdication of leadership by Pierre Poilievre to leave health care out of the Conservatives’ election platform,” he added. “Canadians need to know what they are voting for.”

The Liberals and NDP released detailed and costed election platforms over the weekend. Enforcing the Canada Health Act, increasing the number of doctors and nurses, building hospitals, expanding mental health programs, and delivering pharmacare and dental care were important themes in both platforms.

Speaking on morning radio shows across Canada on Tuesday, Staples pointed out that the federal government transfers over $50 billion in essential health care funding annually to provinces and territories for health care. “Given that large amount of money and widespread public support for Medicare, Canadians deserve to know where party leaders stand,” he told listeners.

The Canadian Health Coalition was founded in 1979 and is comprised of frontline health care workers, community groups and experts committed to universal public health care.
