Prime Minister Carney: Listen to your doctors’ warning on Alberta’s Bill 11!
Prime Minister Mark Carney once told Canadians: “In America, health care is big business – but in Canada, it is a right. Canada will never be America. We must protect and build the institutions that make us strong.” His actions tell a different story.
Reportedly, when his own MPs try to raise concerns about threats to public health care, Prime Minister Carney does not want to hear it. According to Toronto Star reporter Althia Raj, Liberal MPs say he “yells” at caucus members when he doesn’t like the message they deliver. Winnipeg MP Dr. Doug Eyolfson, a physician, experienced this firsthand after raising concerns about the federal government’s lack of response to Alberta’s Bill 11.
“What we had was basically a disagreement,” Dr. Eyolfson told CTV News.
In March, Dr. Hedy Fry, another Liberal physician MP, outright said Alberta is violating the Canada Health Act. Soon after she was gone from the Commons Health Committee. Coincidence?
Bill 11 is Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s plan to open the door to private, U.S.-style health care in Alberta. It creates a two-tier health care system where wealthy people pay to skip the line and get faster access to care while everyone else waits longer.
Alberta is just the beginning. If Bill 11 stands, corporate interests and private insurance lobbyists will push for two-tier health care in every province and territory and our public health care system as we know it will be destroyed.
The doctors in his own caucus are speaking up. Prime Minister Carney needs to hear from Canadians too.
