How did Canada get Medicare? Greg Marchildon traces the history of universal health care in Canada in his latest book, Tommy Douglas and the Quest for Medicare in Canada. Marchildon will be one of many fascinating speakers headlining the SOS Medicare 3.0 Conference in Ottawa on February 24.

Sasha Mullally, Associate Dean, School of Graduate Studies, University of New Brunswick and author of Foreign Practices: Immigrant Doctors and the History of Canadian Medicare, hosted a conversation with Greg Marchildon on his new book at the University of New Brunswick on January 31, 2025. Douglas was at the first SOS Medicare Conference in Ottawa in 1979 that founded the Canadian Health Coalition. His biogragher Marchildon was at the second SOS Medicare Conference in Regina in 2007.

In his latest book, Marchildon draws on various archival sources including speeches, television broadcasts, and cabinet documents, revealing how Douglas’s vision, leadership, and coalition-building among unions won Medicare in Canada.

Marchildon will be joining Anne Lagacé Dowson in a fireside chat at the SOS Medicare 3.0 Conference to discuss the legacy of Douglas, voted the greatest Canadian in a CBC poll in 2004.

The SOS Medicare 3.0 Conference and Political Action Training aims to ensure that defending and expanding Medicare is on the 2025 election agenda. The conference builds on past SOS Medicare Conferences held in 1979 and 2007. It is co-sponsored by the Canadian Health Coalition, Canadian Labour Congress, Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU), the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC).
