March 16 is the Day of Action for Public Health Care
The Government of Alberta has passed the Health Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (No. 2), a law that allows doctors to charge patients out-of-pocket for medically necessary care that should be covered by the public health care system. It creates a two-tier system in Alberta and moves the province toward an American-style, for-profit model of health care.
Why we should all be concerned
This legislation puts public health care at risk across Canada by setting a dangerous precedent that other provinces could follow.
We cannot allow American-style health care to take hold in Canada. The Alberta government must repeal this two-tier law.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Health Minister Marjorie Michel need to speak out, defend our public health care, and compel Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to reverse course. They must enforce the Canada Health Act to protect access to care for everyone.
Take action for public health care on March 16
Health coalitions across Canada are coordinating a Day of Action for Public Health Care on March 16, 2026. In-person demonstrations will be held in communities from coast to coast, alongside an online effort led by the Canadian Health Coalition to flood the inboxes of MPs and federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel, urging enforcement of the Canada Health Act.
