Webinar: Trump’s trade war and what it means for public health care in Canada with Jim Stanford and Angella MacEwen

Canada has a universal public health care system unlike the United States where insurance companies make obscene profits from the sick and injured. How could Trump’s tariffs and counter tariffs harm Medicare, patients and health care workers? How can we protect Canada’s public health care system? What kinds of health care promises should candidates running for federal office be making in the context of the Trump’s trade war?

Join economists Jim Stanford and Angella MacEwen for an online discussion on these topics with the Canadian Health Coalition’s Anne Lagacé Dowson on Monday, April 7 at 12:00 PM EST on Zoom.

Jim Stanford is one of Canada’s best known economic commentators and the Director of the Centre for Future Work, based in Vancouver. For over 20 years, he served as Economist and Director of Policy with Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector trade union (formerly the Canadian Auto Workers). A prolific author of many books and papers, Jim is the author of Economics for Everyone: A Short Guide to the Economics of Capitalism (second edition published by Pluto Books in 2015), which has been published in six languages.

Angella MacEwen is the senior economist for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and a Policy Fellow with the Broadbent Institute. Her primary research focus is understanding the Canadian labour market, broader economic trends and the impacts of social policy on workers. She regularly represents the CUPE at parliamentary committees and in the national media. MacEwen has been a Research Associate with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives since 2006, and contributes to the annual Alternative Federal Budget.
