Tell Minister Michel: Enforce the Canada Health Act and stop Bill 11

The Canadian Health Coalition recently asked a team of expert lawyers to review Alberta’s Bill 11. Their conclusion was clear: Bill 11 breaks federal law and violates the Canada Health Act, the federal law that establishes a national free health care system for everyone in Canada.

Bill 11 would allow doctors in Alberta to charge patients whatever they want for medically necessary care. That means wealthy people pay for faster service while everyone else waits longer. Danielle Smith’s UCP government passed this law to satisfy corporate interests and private insurance lobbyists who see a crisis in public health care as an opportunity to profit. If it is allowed to stand, it sets a precedent that could undermine public health care in every province and territory.

Federal Health Minister Marjorie Michel has called herself the “guardian of the Canada Health Act.” It is time for her to prove it.

Minister Michel must publicly declare that Bill 11 violates the Canada Health Act and take action to enforce the law. She needs to hear from Canadians that they expect her to do exactly that.
