It’s time for Carney and Michel to act on Bill 11

Alberta’s Bill 11 breaks federal law and is a complete violation of the Canada Health Act. Our legal opinion confirms it, and the federal government has known this for months. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith wants to allow doctors to charge whatever they want to patients for medically necessary care. This means that wealthy people will pay for faster care, and everyone else will have to wait even longer for free public care.

The federal government has both the authority and the obligation to withhold billion of dollars in federal transfers unless Alberta Premier Danielle Smith puts an end to this horrific attack on public health care

But instead of action, Canadians are getting silence from Prime Minister Mark Carney and more delay from Health Minister Marjorie Michel.

Every day without federal action allows Alberta’s two-tier health care scheme to move further forward, and sends a signal to every other province and territory that Ottawa will not stop them from doing the same.
