Labour Congress urges creation of a Care Economy Commission within the first 100 days of Parliament

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), a member of the Canadian Health Coalition, has written to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging him to address long standing deficiencies in our care economy.

“We need look no further than the failures of our long-term care system during this pandemic to see how crucial investments in public care infrastructure are to our economy, workers, and our communities. Public expenditure in the care economy would help us meet our current and rising care needs and improve future outcomes – ultimately ensuring a more equitable and resilient care system and creating good, green, family-supporting jobs,” wrote CLC President Bea Bruske.

The Labour congress recommended the government form a Care Economy Commission within the first 100 days of Parliament, to study, design and implement a care strategy for Canada and increase investment in social infrastructure and public services within our care economy.

“Care workers need investments in better, safer jobs that compensate them fairly. People who need care – children and their caregivers, people with disabilities, people who are ill or aging – should have the right to quality, public care services to help them live in dignity, to work or go to school,” added Bruske.
